What Kotoba keeps, and why

Kotoba is a free browser game for learning Japanese. It has no accounts, no ads and no cookies. This page lists everything it keeps and sends.

What stays in your browser

Kotoba saves your learning progress in your browser’s local storage, on your device, so you can pick up where you left off. Keeping your progress is what the game is for, so saving is on from the start.

  • Progress: the words you have met and when each one is due for review, each kana you have met and whether you have mastered it, best scores, daily challenge results, your streak, achievements and your best Quest run.
  • Settings: theme, language, sound, practice choices, and whether you have finished the intro.
  • A Kotoba Plus licence key, only if you activate one.

The game’s own files are cached as well, so it opens without a connection. None of this is sent anywhere, except by Plus sync (below), which stays off unless you turn it on.

Your choice: in Options, set “Save progress” to “This session only”. That erases the progress saved in this browser, and new progress is forgotten when you reload or close the page. Settings are still remembered. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes everything.

Anonymous visit counts

Kotoba uses Vercel Web Analytics to count visits and a few events, such as which practice mode started and how a run ended (score, speed, accuracy). It sets no cookies and does not follow you to other sites: visitors are told apart by a hash of the request that changes daily and is discarded by Vercel within 24 hours. Only totals are visible.

Hosting

Vercel hosts kotoba.online. Like any web host, it receives your IP address and browser details in order to deliver the page, and keeps short-lived technical logs.

Nothing else loads

Fonts and images come from kotoba.online itself: no Google Fonts, ad networks or tracking pixels. The Ko-fi and email links open only when you click them. Listening practice reads words aloud with your browser's built-in speech; if your device has no Japanese voice, some browsers use their vendor's online voice service for it.

Only if you choose Kotoba Plus

Plus is an optional paid upgrade. You pay on Lemon Squeezy’s checkout page; Lemon Squeezy sells Plus as the merchant and handles your payment details and email under its own privacy policy. To check a licence, Kotoba’s server passes the key to Lemon Squeezy. If you turn on cross-device sync, your settings, streak and vocabulary are stored on Kotoba’s server in an Upstash database, filed under a one-way hash of the key rather than the key itself, and deleted after 90 days without a sync.

Що лишається у твоєму браузері

Kotoba зберігає твій навчальний прогрес у локальному сховищі браузера, на твоєму пристрої, щоб можна було продовжити з того ж місця. Саме для цього гра й існує, тож збереження ввімкнене від початку.

  • Прогрес: слова, що вже траплялися, і коли кожне треба повторити, кожен знак кани, що вже траплявся, і чи його опановано, найкращі результати, щоденні виклики, серія днів, досягнення та найкращий забіг у режимі квесту.
  • Налаштування: тема, мова, звук, вибір режимів і те, чи пройдено вступ.
  • Ліцензійний ключ Kotoba Plus — лише якщо ти його активуєш.

Файли самої гри теж кешуються, щоб вона відкривалася без інтернету. Нічого з цього нікуди не надсилається, крім синхронізації Plus (нижче), яка вимкнена, доки ти її не ввімкнеш.

Твій вибір: в «Опціях» постав «Зберігати прогрес» на «Лише в цій сесії». Це стирає прогрес, збережений у цьому браузері, а новий забувається після перезавантаження чи закриття сторінки. Налаштування все одно запам’ятовуються. Очищення даних цього сайту в браузері видаляє все.

Анонімний підрахунок відвідувань

Kotoba використовує Vercel Web Analytics, щоб рахувати відвідування та кілька подій: наприклад, який режим практики почато і як завершився забіг (рахунок, швидкість, точність). Cookie не використовуються, і за тобою не стежать на інших сайтах: відвідувачів розрізняють за хешем запиту, який змінюється щодня і який Vercel видаляє протягом 24 годин. Видно лише загальні цифри.

Хостинг

kotoba.online розміщено на Vercel. Як і будь-який хостинг, Vercel отримує твою IP-адресу та дані браузера, щоб доставити сторінку, і зберігає короткочасні технічні журнали.

Більше нічого не завантажується

Шрифти й зображення надходять із самого kotoba.online: без Google Fonts, рекламних мереж і трекінгових пікселів. Посилання на Ko-fi та пошту відкриваються лише після кліку. Аудіювання озвучує слова вбудованим синтезом мовлення браузера; якщо на пристрої немає японського голосу, деякі браузери використовують для цього онлайн-сервіс свого виробника.

Лише якщо ти обереш Kotoba Plus

Plus — необов’язкове платне розширення. Оплата відбувається на сторінці Lemon Squeezy: він продає Plus як продавець і обробляє твої платіжні дані та email за власною політикою приватності. Щоб перевірити ліцензію, сервер Kotoba передає ключ до Lemon Squeezy. Якщо ти ввімкнеш синхронізацію між пристроями, твої налаштування, серія та словник зберігаються на сервері Kotoba в базі даних Upstash — під одностороннім хешем ключа, а не самим ключем, — і видаляються після 90 днів без синхронізації.
